Online-Seminar: Building resilience and promoting planetary health: the relevance of gender-just solutions in times of COVID-19

Online-Seminar in englischer Sprache in Kooperation mit Woman Leaders for Planetary Health, Women in Global Health Germany und IASS Potsdam.

During the online-seminar, Dr. Nicole de Paula, WLPH and IASS, will address the synergies between sustainable development and human health through the notion of Planetary Health. After explaining the rationale behind the new coalition Women Leaders for Planetary Health (WLPH), she will expose key gendered impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her talk will be followed by short inputs from three other female leaders to illustrate why gender matters when addressing solutions for the current pandemic and for the effectiveness of long-term solutions for human wellbeing:

  • Dr. Kathleen Mar, WLPH and IASS, will discuss how Germany is handling the post-lockdown and the slow reopening in the context of child care, which seems to be less prioritized than other powerful industries.
  • Dr. Maka Maglakelidze, WLPH and IASS, will share insights from Global Alliance on Respiratory Diseases, which  addresses air pollution and COVID-19.
  • Laura Jung, WLPH and KLUG, will  highlight the importance of bringing women to the table, giving the female voices are still underrepresented when it comes to decision-making. Gender equity is needed for more sustainable and gender-just solutions, for climate as well as COVID19.

Maike Voss (MPH) will focus in her 10 minute input on the representation of women in decision-making, research and the public discourse, the role of the (female) workforce as well as the need for a gender-sensitive and interdisciplinary approach in the Covid-19 response.

Dr. Nicole de Paula is the first Klaus Töpfer Sustainability Fellow awardee at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IASS) in Potsdam, Germany. For more than a decade, she has been globally connecting policymakers and researchers to create a public understanding on key issues related to sustainability and public health. As a Planetary Health advocate, she champions the socioeconomic advancement of women through environmental conservation. She is the founder of the Women Leaders for Planetary Health and is currently co-organizing the global meeting of the Planetary Health Alliance, to be held in Brazil in April 2021.

Maike Voss (MPH) is an associate and the head of the Global Health Governance Research Team at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, SWP). Her research focuses on global health governance and sustainable development as well as the interdependencies between health and security policy. In 2018, she got appointed to the Lancet Commission for Synergies between Health Security, Universal Health Coverage and Health Promotion. Additionally, Maike is a part-time PhD student at the London School for Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and teaches at the University of Bielefeld. Before joining SWP she worked as a research associate at the Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research at University Bremen.
